Dear Author: Trick or Treat 2020

I love Trick or Treat, and I’m excited to be signing up again. I’m into all sorts of spooky and seasonal fic, and I’m looking forward to seeing whatever you create!

I love all of these characters, and I will be delighted to get a gift for any of them. If I have more prompts for a given character or canon, it just means I had more ideas and/or was requesting more characters, not that I want it more.

These are mostly fandoms I’ve requested before, and I’ve made updates to my prompts to try to add new ideas, update for new canon, etc. But in the unlikely event that you’re interested in one of my earlier prompts that didn’t get included here, go for it!

I’m also here for something different, if you have a story you’d love to tell about one of the characters I’ve requested (provided it doesn’t run into a DNW). Some of my favorite gifts have been ones I would never have thought to prompt! And I hope you also feel free to mix and match, take part of a prompt and leave the rest, etc.

DNWs

I tend to prefer canon-typical levels of sexual content, which for these canons would mean nothing particularly explicit. I’m not interested in smut/porn as the main focus of the fic.

My DNWs for these canons:

  • Dubcon, noncon, underage, or fic focusing on explicit porn/kink content

  • Major character death. Temporary MCD or minor character death in service of a casefic are fine.

  • Unrequested poly, open relationships, or incest

  • Serious or terminal illness

  • Cannibalism

  • Animal harm/cruelty

  • Ghost cats

For Nancy Drew in particular, it's fine to reference past Ryan/George (canonically underage), but I'd rather not see it dwelt on.

Hidden Legacy
Catalina, Arabella, Runa, Frida, Shadow, Patricia, Regina

Hidden Legacy! I love this canon, and I’d love a chance to see more of any of these characters. I’ve read the canon through Emerald Blaze, and I keep up with the snippets posted on the blog and will read the new short once it’s released more generally, so no worries on spoilers here. :D

I love the worldbuilding in this canon — everything around the powers, Houses, marriages, etc., but also some of the other stuff, like the magic-warped places where things don’t work the way you’d expect. I also love it when a power that seems straightforward gets used in a way you don’t expect, like Cornelius’s ferret heist.

Catalina, Arabella, Runa, Frida, Shadow

Gen is great here. If you want to include a ship or ships, I’m good with Nevada/Rogan as a background ship. If you want to work in a love interest for Catalina and/or Arabella, Catalina/Alessando is fine and I’d be into Arabella/Augustine or Arabella/Stephen Jiang as long as Arabella’s a bit older when they get together, like maybe early-mid 20s? I’d also be interested in seeing more of Catalina and Runa together, whether it’s romantic or just as good friends. We didn’t see much of Runa and Bern interacting in the new book, but I could be into it if the two of them had some time to develop something. Or OC love interests for any of these characters would also be fine.

-Shadow was my favorite new character in Sapphire Flames. And since this is Ilona Andrews, I’m guessing that Shadow is more than she appears to be. What cool power(s) could Shadow manifest, and how? If someone other than Catalina first saw her power, would they tell Catalina, or let it be a surprise? :D

-Catalina’s cooking! Is there ever a case where her cooking knowledge unexpectedly comes in handy?

-I am an absolute sucker for fic about people moving into new homes, looking for new homes, etc., and I'm excited that the Baylors are potentially moving to their own compound. I'd love to see more of that. What kind of places are they shown? Where do they end up moving? Is it haunted, or cursed, or magic-warped, or something even weirder?

-Arabella watching people speculate on what her power is on Herald. Does she ever get tempted to chime in? Maybe come up with a really ridiculous and unbelievable story? Does she ever catch Grandma Frida joining in on the speculation? (Epistolary fic/fic in the form of a message board totally welcome here!)

-Outsider POV from someone suddenly dealing with the Baylors!

-Runa can ingest and neutralize any poison, which made me wonder about, like, forbidden fruits. Can she help someone eat something they're allergic to even if it's not a poison to other people? Is her kitchen basically toxic to anyone who's not her? Are there unexpectedly delicious things Runa can eat that are poisonous to most people, and if so, could she safely share them with others?

-Five Times Grandma Frida spotted one of her grandkids on Herald.

-I know “characters responding to fanfic” has been done a zillion times, but I don’t care — I’m a sucker for it. How do our characters react to fic or art about themselves? (Bonus points if Grandma Frida ends up being the author of the fic!)

-People on Herald start shipping Catalina, Arabella, or Runa with [OC]. She decides she wants to find out why.

-What do urban legends or creepypasta look like in this universe? It could be really fun to see fic written in the form of a podcast or blog post or creepypasta about some event that ends up actually being due to Arabella, Catalina, or Runa’s powers.

Patricia Taft and Regina Taft

Putting these two separately because the prompts are arguably spoiler-y for the new book! I enjoyed both of these characters. Patricia’s obviously extremely competent - thankfully for Leon! — and I also enjoyed seeing Regina work with Catalina.

-What was it like, settling in with the Baylors? Why is Regina hiding from her uncle?

-What does Regina do - develop new arcane constructs? Research and development?

-What was the remodeling of their home aka the former Texas Products like? Did they come across anything hidden/threatening/other?

Hive Mind
Beckett, Gregas, Nicole, Buzz, Atticus, Juniper

I love this series. :D I’m always here for special, special telepaths and the people who love and serve them, so this series was an easy hit right on the sweet spot for my id… and then the author threw in some really interesting worldbuilding, too.

I love how the Hive isn’t a dystopia or a utopia, but something in between — some things are obviously better than our world, and some things are obviously worse, and some things are just different. It’s a fascinating balance and I love the unique view Amber gets of that world.

For this exchange, I’m going with a few of my favorite characters who we don’t get to see as much of in canon as we do Amber and Lucas. But if you’d like to include Amber and/or Lucas, please do!

Gen is great in this canon. If you want to include a ship, I love Amber/Lucas — I am rather OTP-ish about them in this canon, so I’d rather not see them break up or go through a love triangle situation, although I’m OK with seeing them with others before they get together. For other characters, please go nuts as you see fit as long as it’s not incest or an age-gap relationship between someone on Teen Level and someone who’s already been through Lottery.

-I’ve always loved Nicole, and I’d love to see more from her Liaison work! What was the first time she had to cover something up? (Was it on Teen Level?) Does she ever feel conflicted, the way Amber does, or did Lottery select her not to have those qualms?

-I loved Beckett in the new book - I wasn’t expecting to see a character with sensory processing disorder and it was lovely. I’d love to see more about how the Hive works with Beckett to keep him comfortable, or more about his friendship with Lucas back on Teen Level. Are there alternate Halloween traditions for people who need accommodations? How does Beckett feel about Halloween in the Hive? Or maybe someone decides Cee Cee needs a Halloween costume, and Beckett has to find them and explain that Working Cat is Working….

-Gregas! I loved him in the most recent book. :D I’d love to see more of him settling in in the new Teen Level area he’s moved to. Does he still see Wesley, and what does Wesley think about the move? Do the Law Enforcement Teen Level areas have different Halloween traditions?

-Buzz: I love Buzz so much - she’s so unapologetic about being exactly who she is. What’s her favorite Halloween tradition? What was her first Halloween after moving to Level 1 like? Do the people on Level 1 even go out of their way to celebrate Halloween, or is the Level 1 Halloween celebration more for the kids, because the people that high in the Hive are super-busy with demanding careers and know it’s just a set of myths?

-Atticus: Another character I’ve always enjoyed - he’s so sensible and down-to-earth. What’s his life like now on Level 3? Has he noticed any of the luxuries, or is he so focused on his work that he doesn’t have a chance to? How does his new life contrast with growing up on Level 80, and how does he feel about that?

-Juniper: I love Juniper and I hope we’ll see her again at some point. What’s Halloween like at the Sea Farm? Do they have different myths and traditions? How is Juniper settling into her new role?

-Halloween fic! I’d love to see more of the Hive’s Halloween celebrations, whether that’s seeing our character and how they celebrate, or a story that lets us see how people celebrate as families or on Teen Level. :D

-Or more about what other things people in the Hive do for fun! What sorts of hobbies do the members of Amber’s unit have? We know the Hive has the beaches and parks and stadiums — are there other public recreational spaces we haven’t seen yet? Amusement parks?

-Does Amber’s unit ever get to work on a case that seems supernatural? Or maybe one of the other characters deals with a seemingly-supernatural occurrence during their time on Teen Level. Or maybe Amber’s Unit has to fake some supernatural occurrence — seeing Nicole’s perspective as Liaison on that could be awesome.

-I also adore all of the details about the Hive’s Halloween myths. If you want to leave out the requested characters entirely and show me the original team that developed the Hive’s Halloween myths, or something like the guidelines for how the Liaison team can use the Hunter of Souls when covering things up, or an example of Hive creepypasta, that could be awesome. Or show me how the Halloween myths play into another Strike for our team, the way they did with the Strike at the beginning of Hurricane!

-Do teenagers ever get besotted with the Hunter of Souls as a character and write angsty poetry about being kissed by his demon breath? Like… tell me that doesn’t happen. I bet it totally happens. I’m not sure if any of our characters would have been into him, but I bet they knew a friend who was back on Teen Level. Maybe someone got roped into trying to go Outside with them to find him! What would that be like?

How to Survive Camping
Original Camper, Turtle

One of my new favorite canons! I love stories set in the outdoors, and I love spooky things, so this is a great mash-up of two of my favorite things.

I’m enjoying and following the main storyline, so no worries about spoilers. That being said, I’d really love to see something about the campground from outside of Kate’s perspective. Kate is great! But I’d love to see what someone else makes of the campground, or of old land in general.

I would note that the gore in the stories can sometimes be a bit above my comfort level. I’d really enjoy seeing one of the lower-stakes stories, where nobody gets ripped apart and sewn back together with their own intestines. Peril, spookiness, creepiness, etc. are all wonderful, and I love them. I’m just more interested in exploring the chicken-footed-incubus or hammock monster side of the world than the extremely gory parts.

Turtle

I enjoyed what we got of Turtle in the first season, and I’d love to see more about her adventures in her new job!

How did Turtle first figure out what was going on? Kate’s up-front about the rules with her campers - does she have an orientation for employees, or does she make other employees do it because repeating “don’t follow the lights” one more time will destroy her?

What did Turtle do for Halloween the year she worked there? We got to see the man with the skull cup go trick-or-treating - did anything else try to escape via Turtle? Or was she one of the ones watching surveillance? What’s Halloween like at her new gig?

Original Camper

One of my favorite parts of this are the pieces where Kate tells a story that happened to someone else, someone who isn’t fully integrated into the campground already and is just awe-struck by even the smallest unexplained event. I’d love to see something like that!

Why is the camper there? Are they surprised by the rules, or were they looking for something like this? Do they meet something covered by the rules, or something totally new?

Nancy Drew (2019)
Hannah, Lisbeth, Victoria

This canon is one of my favorite new things. It’s not a faithful Nancy Drew adaptation (HOO BOY is it not) but I love it for what it is: a hot garbage plate of supernatural weirdness. I love the supernatural weirdness.

I’m cool with the main characters, but what I’d really love to see explored here are some of the minor characters who we just get hints of in canon. Although please feel free to include anyone from canon! Some of my other favorite characters are George, George’s sister Ted, Laura Tandy, and Ace.

Also, crossover with Murder She Wrote totally welcome. :)

Hannah Gruen

Hannah’s role in canon so far seems to just be as an exposition prop, and I get that… and I guess it’s an interesting modernization of being the housekeeper. But I feel like there’s so much more potential there.

-What other secrets does Hannah have access to? Who else is she helping? I’d love for Nancy’s team to be just one of a bunch of different rag-tag mystery solving groups who Hannah helps. Hell, maybe she doesn’t even work at that library full-time. Maybe Hannah, like, portals into whatever library has a group of mystery solvers who need her. (Crossover with The Librarians welcome!)

-Is Keeper a job that gets passed down? How did Hannah get into this gig? Are there any supernatural perks that go with it?

Lisbeth

Lisbeth is one of those characters I want to wrap up in a soft blanket and set loose in a better-suited canon. She’s amazing. I get that how canon is structured means we don’t get to see enough of her being amazing… but that’s what fic is for!

-I’d love to see another time when one of Lisbeth’s investigations crossed over with the supernatural! Is this something she’s used to, working for the State Police, or is it just Horseshoe Bay?

-I’m fine with Lisbeth/Bess (it is canon!) but would also enjoy seeing her with a different female love interest who’s not, y’know, being manipulated by her terrible family into putting Lisbeth’s job in danger. That could be cool, too. Or I could totally see a future where Nancy’s gone fully rogue and Lisbeth is trying to catch her, and they have a frenemy thing going on.

Victoria Fan

I adore George’s whole mixed-up family. Her mother is legit terrible, but like… understandably so. I can imagine that being able to see the supernatural, and being unable to shut it off without booze, would be amazingly bad in a place like Horseshoe Bay.

-What previous supernatural encounters did George not notice because Victoria kept them from her?

-Why has Victoria stayed in Horseshoe Bay, given everything she sees? Is it just the family ties or is there something more?

Pumpkinheads
Deja, Jonah

I picked this up on a whim when it came out last year and adored it. This is such an amazing fall canon — you couldn’t possibly stuff more autumn into DeKnock’s World Famous Pumpkin Patch & Autumn Jamboree. And I adored both Deja and Josiah (aka Josie) — their friendship, and the way they worked through figuring out where they’ll go next. :D It’s a little bittersweet to read this year, since fall festivals are not an option right now in my part of the world, but it’s still nice to think about and look forward to next year.

I’d be happy with either gen or ship — I loved Deja and Josie’s friendship, and I’d adore seeing any of their past adventures at the Patch, whether alone, together, or with others. Or if you do ship it, I’m also here for Deja/Josie!

-An exploration of some place we didn’t get to see in canon! What happens at Grandma’s Chicken Races, or the pumpkin drop or the pumpkin slingshot? Are there more attractions off the map that we didn’t see at all? Does Gourd Golf use actual gourds that have to be replaced each year?

-More about the food, OMG. I love fall and attractions like corn mazes, but I always want more than cider donuts, which is what most corn mazes in my area have. I was totally feeling what the Patch was putting down with their food concessions. I adored all of the food details, like the Freeto Pie and the cider slushees. I wanted to know every single pie this place serves (Five Pies Deja Got To Try, and one that still eludes her?). What other foods does the Patch have? We get some hints from canon that they mix up their offerings from time to time — what foods have they tried that failed miserably? And how on earth do they sell enough succotash to keep a stand open?

-Josiah and Deja come back to the Patch the following season as guests! What’s it like? What are their favorite parts?

-What if they end up going to school somewhere close enough to come back to the Patch the following year? I’d love to see either or both of them running the Haunted Hacienda!

-Or tell me about a curse or haunting at the Patch! Is the Haunted Hacienda really haunted? Does a ghost keep re-lighting the fires in the S’mores Pit after hours? Does the Patch get hit by a bad-luck jinx that circulates among the employees? (Does Josiah totally believe in it and Deja, not so much?) Or maybe the scarecrows start coming to life!
