burglebezzlemenHalloween is one of my favorite holidays, and I’m excited to be taking part in this exchange! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
I am burglebezzlement over on AO3.
I’m open to a wide range of fic. If you’re not feeling any of these prompts and you’ve got a fic you’d love to write (that doesn’t hit a DNW), please feel free to write that instead — some of my favorite gifts have been ones I never would have thought to prompt. Also, while I’m focusing on Halloween-y stuff in my prompts for this exchange, I love other types of fic too. I have more non-seasonal likes in earlier exchange letters if you’re interested.
I have longer prompts for some canons, but it’s either because I had more ideas or because I was requesting more characters and wanted to make sure there were prompts that would work for all of them. I’m excited to be getting any of these canons!
I love ghost stories, cryptids, mysteries, and spooky and Gothic themes. Extreme horror or explicit gore aren’t my thing, but anything up to that point is awesome, including relatively dark fic and unhappy or unresolved endings. And fluff and humor and happy endings are great too! I'm requesting trick and treat for all of these. :D
For all of these canons, please feel free to add supernatural elements if they’re not already there in canon. Also, while I don’t usually prompt crossovers, I’d be open to a crossover with Ghostbusters (2016), especially for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or How I Met Your Mother.
I’m always here for casefic/monster of the week fic, including a small case or a scene from a longer case. And for a Halloween-y twist, I love casefic about investigating weird phenomena, whether they end up being real or not.
I love characters telling spooky stories around the campfire, or while stuck somewhere (on a stakeout? stranded by weather?).
I love houses and places and people getting to explore said houses and places. Architectural horror and a strong sense of place are awesome. Creepy shops that only show up some of the time, apartments with that one door the landlord tells you never to open, abandoned research facilities, islands, castles, summer camps, decaying amusement parks — if it’s the type of setting the Scooby Doo gang has checked out, I’m probably into it.
Haunted or cursed jewelry or objects are great. Jewelry with a dark backstory! Character accidentally finds a cursed object and someone must break the curse!
Character(s) enter a pumpkin contest — maybe pumpkin growing, maybe pumpkin decorating, maybe pumpkin chucking, maybe something totally different. Pumpkins are destroyed in an entertaining manner.
Weather is awesome. Throw characters out into a blizzard, thunderstorm, etc. Or let them curl up inside and make hot cocoa!
DNW: Dubcon, noncon, PWP/fic focusing on explicit porn or kink, underage, major character death (although temporary MCD or minor character death in the service of a casefic are fine), cannibalism, and terminal illness tropes (e.g. Hanahaki Disease).
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Heather
I love Heather and her lack of social decorum. :D She’s not just Rebecca’s coolest friend — she’s the most reasonable one of the group. I love her deadpan delivery, and the fact that she obviously cares about Rebecca.
Romantically, I could totally see her with Valencia, and I also love her friendships with Valencia and Heather. I'd also really enjoy seeing her bounce off one of the characters she doesn’t spend much time with, like Paula or Darryl (and I definitely like Darryl/WhiJo if you’re interested in that as a background ship).
The obvious place to go here is the creepy murder house with the bad reno that she’s now living in with Rebecca. Maybe a haunting? Or maybe she comes up with a mystery to distract Rebecca? Or maybe Rebecca decides to throw a Halloween party, or decides to host a seance or Ouija night, and it ends up being a terrible idea because of course it does.
For shippy ideas, maybe Valencia and Heather get wrapped up in one of Rebecca’s schemes and get trapped together somewhere unexpected as a result. Or maybe Rebecca finds out one of them likes the other, and inflicts shenanigans on them both in the quest to help them find happiness. Or maybe Valencia’s belief that ghosts are obsessed with her leads her to try to get Heather’s cooperation in smudging or exorcising the murder house.
How I Met Your Mother: Marshall Eriksen
I love Marshall’s obsession with the paranormal, and I’d be delighted by a story where he encounters or investigates a ghost, crytpid, or other Enigma of the Mystical (tm).
Maybe Marvin or Daisy has a real monster in their closet or under their bed. Maybe Marshall takes the family (or the whole gang) along on a trip to explore a reported haunting or cryptid sighting. Maybe Marshall, Lily, and Ted look into a campus legend during their college days. Or maybe the phenomenon ends up being a prank pulled by Barney, Robin, and/or Tracy!
Non-supernatural-related fic is totally awesome too. What about another time when Marshall said “I can run/walk that far!” and lived to regret it? Or where were Marshall, Ted, and/or Lily during the 2003 NYC blackout? Or maybe Marshall gets hired to be a consultant for The Wedding Bride 3 and things go hilariously wrong.
I love Marshall/Lily, and for background pairings, Barney/Robin and Tracy/Ted.
Little Evil: Al
So, I loved this movie, and I really, really loved Al — she’s hilarious and just so much herself through the whole thing. I loved the way she went along with all the weirdness of Gary’s growing fears, and her ridiculous truck, and just, like, everything.
I kind of wish we’d gotten more about Wendy, Al’s wife, in the movie, so if you’re interested in shipfic, something about their marriage that rounds Wendy out a bit could be great. And I love Al's friendship with Gary, so anything more about that would be amazing. A Gary/Sam and Al/Wendy double date could be fun — generic suburbiana on the surface, with all the we’re-not-talking-about-the-satanic-cult underneath it.
Other possibilities: who (or what) else might try to come after Lucas? How might Lucas try to solve that… and how could Gary and Al try to deal with that situation? Lucas still has his powers, and being bonded to Gary as his dad isn’t going to stop that.
What if Al and Wendy agree to babysit for Lucas for the weekend? Would Lucas team up with Al’s stepson? Or what if the families go trick or treating together, and Lucas starts changing people into their costumes?
Al works for the real estate firm with Gary — what are they going to do with a former nunnery with a pit to hell in the chapel? What would that real estate ad look like? I’d be totally open to a fic written as a series of real estate ads.
Lumberjanes: April, Jen, Ripley
I love April's enthusiasm, her creativity, her bottomless trunk of mysteries, and her fierce protectiveness for her friends. I love Jen’s perpetual exasperation and love for her campers, and the way she sometimes gives in and joins in their general mayhem. And Ripley — who couldn’t fall in love with Ripley, right?
I love gen about these characters, and I love everyone in Roanoke Cabin. I do lowkey ship April/Barney, and background Mal/Molly is great as well.
In terms of canon, I’m caught up through the Yeti roller-derby story, and spoilers for anything in the most recent issues are totally fine.
I love fic set at Lumberjanes camp, in the forest etc. around the camp, and in Bear Woman’s weird land-of-the-lost world. Basically anything where the Lumberjanes have to solve some sort of problem, whether that problem is supernatural or totally mundane, would be awesome.
The Lumberjanes do Summerween (Halloween in summer)! Do they dress up? And maybe there’s someone in a costume who they don’t recognize, and it turns out to be a ghost/cryptid/other thing they have to unravel. Or maybe they just have fun making costumes together!
For non-supernatural stuff, maybe a storm hits the Lumberjanes camp. Or a camp-wide game (hide and seek? Assassins? Calvinball? Another game of Capture the Flag?) leads to unexpected discoveries.
April, Ripley, or Jen bonding with Bubbles! I love Bubbles, and I love the fact that Bubbles is Molly’s raccoon but has a special bond with Ripley, too. And we don’t get to see April or Jen interact with Bubbles much, so that could be fun too!
April: I love stories about April getting into her competitive badge-earning headspace and someone else pulling her out of it. Or an excerpt from April’s bestiary-slash-diary could be awesome!
Ripley: Five times Ripley got to hug a furry animal/dinosaur/cryptid! Or Ripley meets Calvin & Hobbes, somehow (maybe Calvin’s time machine actually took him to the Land of the Lost rather than the actual Jurassic?)
Jen: The campers decide to give Jen a special day of relaxation and fun. Things do not go as planned.
Psych: Woody
Woody’s the best! I love Woody’s humor, his willingness to keep on trucking even when something’s gone totally wrong, and his wacky mix of credulity and unexpected insight.
I’d really love something gen here, and I love seeing Woody bounce off pretty much anyone from the main cast. Ship-wise, most of Woody’s canonical involvements have been terrible, terrible ideas — but if you have an idea for an OC (who’s not trying to kill him?), that could be fun! In terms of background ships, I’m fine with the various canon ships, Shawn/Gus, Shawn/Lassier, Gus/Jules, etc.
For a Halloween-themed prompt: Maybe Woody starts seeing ghosts, or the corpses start talking to him, Tru Calling-style. Would anyone believe him? As far as Woody knows, Shawn’s a psychic, but would Shawn just assume Woody’s been hitting the fun drugs again? Or maybe Woody’s the only one to figure out that one of the other characters is actually a supernatural creature of some kind.
Or for something more canon-verse, anything slice-of-life would be great. Woody gets into a feud with an animal who hangs out near his Airstream. Woody decides that the Airstream life is no longer for him, and tries looking for a new place, but there are complications. (Or maybe a series of complications? Five Crime Scenes Woody Accidentally Moved Into!) Or Woody tries to help Shawn and Gus with a case, with mixed results.
The Good Place: Janet, Jason
The Good Place! I love this weird, wacky, unexpectedly touching little show. :D There are so many great places to go with worldbuilding, backstory, unexpected side explorations, and general antics. I love Jason and Janet, and would really enjoy seeing a fic that explored either or both of them a little further.
I’d be happy with either gen or ship for this request, but I do ship Jason/Janet. :D For background ships/characters, I enjoy any combination of Eleanor, Chidi, and Tahani, and I have a soft spot for Vicki, too.
What would a haunting or ghost even mean to an AI like Janet? After Michael reboots Janet in TGP 2.0, is she haunted by unexpected remnants of her old programming?
What if the real Good Place comes looking for Janet? Or what if she’s phoning home and reporting back to the real Good Place? Or what if she’s missing vital software updates from the real Good Place — how could that affect her?
I’d also love more stories about Jason’s life on Earth. His friendship with PillBoi is great and I’d love something exploring that further. Maybe another time they tried (and failed) to be criminal masterminds? Or maybe they encounter a ghost/haunting/cryptid but have a totally off-the-wall explanation for it, and don’t realize what’s actually going on!
Or maybe Eleanor, Tahani, Chidi, and/or Jason come to Janet with questions about weird experiences/close encounters they had on Earth. Janet’s explanations are either totally rational, or way weirder than they thought they’d be.
I realize canon is coming back soon and will be airing multiple new episodes in the writing period. I am 100% on board with canon departures, backstory, AU, various canon-reboot-fusions, or whatever you come up with for a setting. I’ll be watching as it airs, so no worries on spoilers if you do want to include stuff from the new season.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy, Lillian, Xan
I love this show, and I love these three characters, alone or in combination. I’d be so delighted to see them celebrating Halloween in their own way, or dealing with shenanigans gone wrong, or whatever else you might come up with!
I love gen in this canon! For ships, I really enjoyed Kimmy and Perry in S3. I could also totally see Kimmy and Xan becoming closer and eventually getting together (maybe a few years down the road?). I also loved Lillian/Artie, and for background ships, I like Titus and Mikey and I totally think they’ll work it out eventually. I also could enjoy an original character of whatever gender as a love interest for Kimmy or Xan. I’d rather not see Jacqueline shipped with Kimmy or Xan. (Although if Jacqueline/Lillian interests you, I’d be OK with that!)
Kimmy: What’s Halloween like at the startup she’s working for? Does Kimmy organize a costume competition for the dogs? (Dog puns optional, but so very welcome.) Or maybe she’s doing a Trick or Treat program, keeping kids safe. What would Kimmy do if someone invited her on a date and took her to an escape room without warning her? Or maybe Kimmy gets stuck somewhere with Cyndee and/or Gretchen, and they have to escape.
Lillian: The apartment building has two ghosts already — Lillian’s late husband Roland, and Titus disguising himself in a sheet to come eat her food — and scenes where Lillian encounters either could be great. Or what other secrets might the apartment building (which is totally not a tugboat) be hiding? How would Lillian react to Kimmy trying to throw a haunted house party for the neighborhood’s kids?
I’m always here for Lillian versus the hipsters. Or something about Lillian’s distrust of the future and technology could be fun, too! Maybe Lillian tries to use social media in her next campaign, or maybe Artie gets her something to make her life easier, but it backfires in some way, or works too well.
Xan: I love Xan, and really, anything would be amazing. A dormitory haunting — you know her roommates would be all about rights for the differently vital. :D Maybe Xan uncovers a dark Voorhees secret? Or maybe she throws a party at the Voorhees townhouse, but things go horribly wrong. Or Xan & Kimmy slice of life, with the two of them bonding over someting unexpected.
I love Kimmy and Xan’s shared love for the Baby-Sitter’s Club. Maybe Kimmy decides to help Xan rediscover the True Meaning of Halloween by staging a scene from one of the books, or maybe they find a mystery that’s just like something out of a BSC Mystery series novel.
I also love the hints we got in S3 about a Yuko uprising. How might any of these characters fight the uprising? Did Xan’s father have his business parter program some sort of failsafe into the Yukos for his family and if so, could Xan have unexpected powers over the Yukos?

Or maybe Kimmy gets stuck somewhere with Cyndee and/or Gretchen, and they have to escape.
Lillian: The apartment building has two ghosts already — Lillian’s late husband Roland, and Titus disguising himself in a sheet to come eat her food — and scenes where Lillian encounters either could be great. Or what other secrets might the apartment building (which is totally not a tugboat) be hiding? How would Lillian react to Kimmy trying to throw a haunted house party for the neighborhood’s kids?
I’m always here for Lillian versus the hipsters. Or something about Lillian’s distrust of the future and technology could be fun, too! Maybe Lillian tries to use social media in her next campaign, or maybe Artie gets her something to make her life easier, but it backfires in some way, or works too well.
Xan: I love Xan, and really, anything would be amazing. A dormitory haunting — you know her roommates would be all about rights for the differently vital. :D Maybe Xan uncovers a dark Voorhees secret? Or maybe she throws a party at the Voorhees townhouse, but things go horribly wrong. Or Xan & Kimmy slice of life, with the two of them bonding over someting unexpected.
I love Kimmy and Xan’s shared love for the Baby-Sitter’s Club. Maybe Kimmy decides to help Xan rediscover the True Meaning of Halloween by staging a scene from one of the books, or maybe they find a mystery that’s just like something out of a BSC Mystery series novel.
I also love the hints we got in S3 about a Yuko uprising. How might any of these characters fight the uprising? Did Xan’s father have his business parter program some sort of failsafe into the Yukos for his family and if so, could Xan have unexpected powers over the Yukos?
